The Three Lions Explore for FIFA 2026 Camps Amid Concerns of Losing Preferred Location to Netherlands.
England's football governing body has sent operational staff to the America this week to evaluate potential bases for the forthcoming global finals, amid growing worries that their top-pick location could be allocated by the Dutch national team.
Tournament Draw Complexities Alter Preparations
Head coach Thomas Tuchel had earlier cleared an FA strategy for England to set up camp in Kansas following a warm-up training camp in Fort Lauderdale. Yet, after the recent group stage draw, there are now fears that the Netherlands, who play their group stage matches in Kansas, will be given priority on the desired facility at Sporting Kansas City—a state-of-the-art centre used by US Soccer.
The world governing body allocates training bases according to geographic location and FIFA rankings if there is competition, with the draw potentially placing the FA against the Netherlands and Argentina for sites in the tournament's central region.
Considering Alternative Sites
With England's group stage matches scheduled to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now reportedly exploring other options on the east coast. The FA began its scouting process for training bases at the beginning of the year, with Tuchel and director of football John McDermott visiting possible sites during the Club World Cup last summer.
Despite this advanced preparation, there was always an understanding that the final tournament draw could significantly alter their plans.
Knockout Stage Logistics Plans
England face the eighth most demanding group stage draw in terms of mileage. Winning Group L would set England on track for a last-32 game in Atlanta, then a possible round of 16 match in Mexico City.
- Significant Change: The FA may opt to choose to travel from match to match for the later rounds if England qualify, a significant shift from its usual protocol of having a single tournament base.
- Tournament Organizers Encouragement: FIFA is understood to be actively encouraging such a flexible approach for the expansive 2026 tournament.
Once the base camp is confirmed, the FA will focus on organizing two pre-tournament matches in Florida at the beginning of June.
