New research reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying these medications must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
