France's Prime Minister Steps Down After Less Than a Month Amid Broad Backlash of New Cabinet
The French political turmoil has worsened after the recently appointed premier suddenly stepped down within hours of announcing a cabinet.
Swift Departure During Political Turmoil
The prime minister was the third PM in a twelve-month period, as the country continued to stumble from one government turmoil to another. He resigned hours before his initial ministerial gathering on the start of the week. Macron accepted the prime minister's resignation on the start of the day.
Strong Backlash Regarding Fresh Cabinet
Lecornu had faced furious criticism from opposition politicians when he presented a fresh cabinet that was largely similar since last previous month's ousting of his predecessor, the previous prime minister.
The presented administration was dominated by Macron's supporters, leaving the cabinet almost unchanged.
Opposition Criticism
Opposition parties said the prime minister had stepped back on the "significant change" with past politics that he had vowed when he came to power from the unpopular previous leader, who was dismissed on 9 September over a suggested financial restrictions.
Future Government Course
The question now is whether the head of state will decide to terminate the legislature and call another snap election.
Marine Le Pen's political ally, the head of the opposition figure's opposition group, said: "We cannot achieve a return to stability without a fresh vote and the parliament's termination."
He continued, "Obviously Emmanuel Macron who chose this administration himself. He has failed to comprehend of the present conditions we are in."
Election Calls
The opposition movement has advocated for another poll, believing they can increase their positions and presence in the assembly.
France has gone through a period of instability and parliamentary deadlock since the president called an indecisive sudden poll last year. The assembly remains separated between the main groups: the liberal wing, the far right and the moderate faction, with no absolute dominance.
Budget Deadline
A spending package for next year must be agreed within coming days, even though political parties are at disagreement and the prime minister's term ended in less than a month.
Opposition Vote
Factions from the progressive side to conservative wing were to hold gatherings on Monday to decide whether or not to support to dismiss Lecornu in a no-confidence vote, and it seemed that the administration would fail before it had even started work. France's leader reportedly decided to step down before he could be ousted.
Cabinet Appointments
Nearly all of the key cabinet roles revealed on the previous evening remained the unchanged, including the justice minister as justice minister and Rachida Dati as culture minister.
The position of economic policy head, which is essential as a fragmented legislature struggles to pass a budget, went to a Macron ally, a Macron ally who had formerly acted as industry and energy minister at the beginning of Macron's second term.
Surprise Selection
In a surprise move, Bruno Le Maire, a government partner who had served as economy minister for multiple terms of his term, came back to government as military affairs head. This enraged officials across the various parties, who considered it a indication that there would be no challenging or change of his corporate-friendly approach.
