RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
